William Charles Hicks

William Charles Hicks, Wing-Commander, AFC. (B. abt 1885). An aeroplane pilot receiving aviator’s certificate 494 from the Royal Aero Club on 27 May 1913, Hicks transitioned from the RNAS to RAF and commanded HMA No. 9, R31. He may also have flown on R36. He was promoted to RAF Wing-Commander in 1919 and was later a Senior Staff Officer with Balloon Command in the 1930s. He was among the senior technical staff involved in developing airship flying and handling procedures. Despite his interaction with senior staff such as Scott, Johnston, Booth, Wann and Thomas, little is known about Hicks.
