Goerge Ernest Long served on Coastal and Sea Scout non-rigids during WWI, along with being a crew member on HMA No. 9, No. 23 and Second Coxswain on R33. He might have served on R36, although there is currently no evidence for such, but he definitely was assigned to refitting R36’s main controls during her reconditioning in 1924. When R33 broke away from her mast, he helped secure the seriously damaged bow, enabling a safe return to Pulham, for which he received the AFM.
He later served as Assistant Coxswain on R100. As of 1961, Long was still working at the Royal Aircraft Establishment at Cardington, nearing retirement.
