Lost to the R38
B. 1885 D. 24 Aug 1921 in R38 crash. Pannell started working for NPL in 1906 with some focus upon strength and fatigue in welded joints. He eventually transferred to aeronautical research in 1914. After 1916 he devoted most of his time to full scale, instrumented tests on rigid airships, with emphasis upon aerodynamics, friction, hull surface, and drag research. He was present on the third flight of R36 in April, 1921 but was killed when the R38 crashed later that August. He was active with the Royal Aeronautical Society.
